Holland & Knight has launched a pro bono program to help lawyers in financial need who are facing ethics charges in Illinois.

The program, called the “Attorney Defense Initiative,” is the first of its kind in the nation, according to a press release by Holland & Knight, which has expanded its national legal profession team in the past year.

At first, Holland & Knight lawyers will handle most of the cases. But the law firm aims to eventually include pro bono lawyers from other law firms too.

The press release quotes James Grogan, deputy administrator and chief counsel of the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission. There are many talented lawyers providing service to lawyers in ethics cases, and they all perform some amount of pro bono service, Grogan said. “However, there is a real need to provide consistently available quality legal representation for lawyers in financial need. This truly is a terrific idea.”
