TEACHING VISUAL PERSUASION

Neil R. Feigenson, Quinnipiac University

Christina O. Spiesel, Quinnipiac University

Law is a part of the larger culture, which is increasingly dominated by mass mediated images from movies, television, CD-ROMs, DVDs, the Internet, and elsewhere. Successful lawyers today are already deploying visual resources as well as words to tell their clients' stories and advocate on their behalf. We have devised ways to prepare law students to work in this new legal environment.

To give attendees a taste of both the problems and pleasures of this new world of law practice, we offer an interactive workshop that will briefly survey the kinds of images at play in the law and will then move from presentation to participation. We will begin by showing examples of the kinds of images at play in the law. Participants will then engage in an exercise that will give them an opportunity to explore what happens when words and images combine. In a brief concluding discussion, we hope to explain how, through such exercises, law students can learn how to think about and critique legal visual materials.
