Media coverage of crime can have a major impact on both the creation and implementation of criminal justice policy. Market forces may shape media images of the causes, nature, and extent of criminality in ways that may not necessarily depict a complete or accurate picture of reality. Politicians, in the view of some recent writers on the subject, may manipulate such images to further political ends having little to do with crime control. Potential jurors' attitudes may be shaped by media images of crime in ways that may affect jury verdicts. This panel considers the theoretical and practical implications of the intersection of the media and the criminal justice system. Topics addressed will include empirical data on the nature and impact of media portrayals of the relationship between race and criminality, political and legal issues raised by that intersection, the connection between media images and our retributive emotions, and the political and social role of "moral panics" about such matters as child sexual abuse and drug abuse.
