Prelegal Education and Admission to
the Globalized Law School
Moderator: Vincent A. Thomas, Hamline University
If legal education is changing because of globalization, does it follow that prelegal education and admission to law school must change too? Is the prelegal education traditionally held up as best by law schools-a rigorous, broad, liberal arts education that emphasizes the development of analytical, critical thinking, and writing skills-by itself, sufficient to prepare students for success in a globalized law school? What other skills, personal qualities, and experiences should be added or emphasized? Is there a role for law faculty to play in deciding what these new attributes should be? Can law faculty help prelaw advisors and college faculty provide better advice to students considering law school as a result of these changes? Can law faculty work with admissions professionals to assess these new qualities, some of which may be intangible, that will be essential to success in a globalized law school?
A panel consisting of law school faculty members, a prelaw advisor, and practicing attorney will lead our discussion of these questions.
