The importance of pension and employee benefits law in current American society cannot be overstated. Pension fund assets are increasing rapidly and now total more than eight trillion dollars. Also increasing is worker participation: nearly half of all workers now participate in some form of retirement plan. Responding to these trends, a growing number of law schools offer courses in employee benefits law. While this development is to be lauded, pensions and other plan-based benefits are too central to be discussed only in a stand-alone course. Pension and benefit law also affects, and should be incorporated into, other courses in the curriculum: elder law, family law, health law, tax law, and the law of trusts and estates. With brief presentations, sample syllabi, and dialogue with the audience, this panel will explore how to best integrate pension and employee benefit issues into these other courses.
