Cultural Influences and Legal Education: Perspectives from Both Sides of the Podium

Moderator:
Martha Peters, University of Iowa

Speakers:Okianer Christian Dark, Howard University

  • Jean C. Love, University of Iowa
  • Kenneth B. Nunn, University of Florida
  • Nancy J. Soonpaa, Texas Tech University Diverse demographic characteristics on both sides of the lectern affect the teaching and learning environment in a law school classroom. Professors bring with them attitudes and beliefs grounded in characteristics such as their age, gender, race, and religious backgrounds, as do students.

When both the professor and the student are aware of how these characteristics affect their contributions in the classroom, that informed environment can provide a rich educational experience. However, when a professor teaches only within a narrow range of personal experience or a student is receptive only to an approach consistent with personal experience, the potential for richness of classroom diversity has been squandered.

This session explores how to consider diversity within the classroom on both sides of the lectern and how to enhance the educational experience for both professors and students. Panelists will share their experiences and ideas related to teaching "outside the box" and incorporating diversity. Participants will have an opportunity to contribute their experiences and ideas and to discuss any issues raised in the session.
