This panel will focus on global and national issues regarding land-based cultural heritage. In many ethnic communities, both national and international, cultural heritage is linked to land. Indian nations and indigenous people around the world continue to address issues involving land and land-use. The grantees of Spanish and Mexican land grants and their successors-in-interest have struggled for well over a century to reclaim rights to use the grants' former common lands; the Colorado Supreme Court recently recognized some of these rights. Recent developments in Hawaii, South Africa, and the Philippines reflect the significance, urgency and global nature of issues involving land-based cultural heritage. This panel will highlight current conflicts and recent developments; it will also examine the use of historical evidence on behalf of social change.
