Deans feel constant pressure to look at their schools through the eyes of someone else. Potential donors have interests that they will fully support financially, but that may diverge from the path charted by the dean and the faculty. U.S. News and World Report forces schools to focus on factors its ranking system makes salient. The realities of the advertising world encourage us, in our print and web marketing, to stress programs and activities that may be more fashionable than enduring or useful. Deans from a variety of different schools will talk about the effects that forces like these have on them and the management of their institutions.
