Classroom incivilities: the teacher's "classroom nightmare." The classroom erupts or turns silent. The students appear to be sullen, angry, uncooperative, or out-of-control. We tend to focus on students' incivilities in the classroom, but incivility is a two-way street. What do we do as teachers that students perceive as uncivil? How do our incivilities trigger, or exacerbate, theirs? What can we do to avoid the incivility trap? This interactive session will focus on strategies for preventing classroom incivilities. We will identify specific teacher behaviors to be avoided, the critical time periods, and positive strategies for preventing incivilities.
