A Globalized Theory of Public Health Law
Moderator: Dayna Bowen Matthew, University of Kentucky
Speakers: - Lawrence Gostin, Georgetown University
- Allyn Taylor, Legal Advisor, Tobacco Free Initiative, World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland
This program will explore the theory and practice of a globalized view of public health law. Several topics now familiar to the intersection between the state in its role as protector of the public health, and its citizens, transcend national borders as public health threats are imported and exported in a global economy. Moreover, issues of individual vs. nation-state rights arise beyond the U.S. model, with different implications in different countries. Speakers will explore a range of topics from the effect of immigration laws on the spread and control of infectious disease; to the role of anti-discrimination laws in different nations; to the use of treaties and other instruments of international law to protect individual rights and public health around the world.
