Single-Gender Education: Legal and Policy Challenges

Moderator:
Michael Heise, Case Western Reserve University

Speakers:
Nancy Levit, University of Missouri-Kansas City
Denise C. Morgan, New York Law School
Rosemary C. Salomone, St. John's University (view material)

The U.S. v. Virginia decision in 1996 established the broad contours of the Supreme Court's treatment of single-gender education. Notwithstanding that decision, questions endure about its full implications for higher and K-12 education in the public and private sectors. Concurrent with important legal developments is on-going social science research endeavoring to more fully understand the nuanced and complex questions found at the intersection of gender and education. Panelists will consider legal issues raised by single-gender schools, as well as issues bearing on "sameness and difference," and how the problems inherent in that distinction pose a dilemma for operationalizing the equality ideal through single-gender education.
