AIR FARES (DISCOUNTED)
AALS is pleased to announce that it has been able to secure special discount agreements with both United Airlines and US Airways. These fares are valid for travel from December 31, 2000 through January 10, 2001. Reservations can be made by you or your professional travel consultant.
United Airlines offers a 5% discount off the lowest applicable fare and 10% off the unrestricted mid-week coach fares when purchased 7 days in advance. An additional 5% discount will apply when you purchase your tickets at least 60 days in advance of departure. Discounts apply on United, Shuttle by United and United Express. Call United toll free at (800) 521-4041 and refer to the Meeting ID Number 598BS (7 days a week, 7:00 a.m. - midnight EST.) Mileage Plus members receive full credit for all miles flown to this meeting.
US Airways offers 7% off First and Envoy Class and any published promotional round trip fare. A 12% discount off unrestricted coach fares will apply with 7-day advance reservations and ticketing required. Plan ahead and receive an additional 5% discount when ticketing 60 days in advance of departure. US Airways will also offer exclusive negotiated rates for those unable to meet restrictions of promotional round trip fares (continental US travel only). AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION
Taxi fare from San Francisco Airport is approximately $33-35; travel time is 20-30 minutes. Taxis are metered.
SFO Airporter operates buses to the Hilton San Francisco (5th stop); buses depart every 15 minutes from the lower level, center boarding traffic island, color coded Blue, from 6:00 a.m. to 11:10 p.m., seven days a week. The fare is $11. Buses depart from the Hilton every 15 minutes from 5:10 a.m. through 10:55 p.m. No reservations are necessary; payment is by cash only. Tickets may be purchased on the SFO Airporter bus or at the Mason Street entrance of the Hilton.
Super Shuttle operates van service with stops at each of our convention hotels. There can be lengthy waits for shuttles between the hours of 1 to 5 p.m. The shuttle runs from the upper level, center boarding traffic island. The fare is $11 each way. For return reservations, call (800) 258-3826,

CITY TRANSPORTATION
BART is the subway system, which services the city and east bay (Oakland, Berkeley) from approximately 4:00 a.m. to 12 midnight during the week; fares range from $1.10-4.70. Municipal Railway (Muni) operates buses, light rail and cable car vehicles around the city. Fares are $1 except on cable cars, where the fare is $2. CAR RENTAL (DISCOUNTED)
National Car Rental is offering AALS registrants daily, weekly, weekend and hourly discounted rates for this meeting. To make a reservation, call 1-800-227-7368, press 1 for Domestic Reservations, and refer to Recap ID # 6800469. Additionally, National will offer the lowest published rate when you make your reservation, plus an additional 10% off of that rate, so be sure to ask about the lowest rate. Advance reservations are recommended. National will pass along to AALS meeting attendees any frequent flyer agreements between National and any airline in effect at the time that the reservation is made.
You may pick up your car and return it to any National outlet in the greater San Francisco area (including Oakland) without penalty. National Car Rental has an outlet two blocks from the Hilton San Francisco at 550 O'Farrell St. There is also an outlet at 1600 Mission Street.

CHILD CARE
The following agencies are listed by the Hilton San Francisco. Call the agencies directly for current rates and to make arrangements for babysitting. Neither the Hilton San Francisco nor AALS recommends these agencies but provides this information for your reference.
Starr Belly Child Care Services: (888) 782-3559. This is a referral agency, which charges an up-front, non-refundable referral fee, to be charged in advance to a credit card. This fee ranges from $35-60. Separate fees to the childcare provider are $10 per hour for one child, $2 per hour for each
additional child, with a 4-hour minimum; and a transportation fee of between $5-20. Payment must be made in cash.
Bay Area Second Mom: (650) 858-2469. Rates begin at $18 per hour for one or two children, with a 4-hour minimum and transportation fees. Payment must be made in cash.
HOTEL RESERVATION INFORMATION
Complete instructions on how to register for the Annual Meeting and make hotel reservations can be found with the housing and registration forms (brochure insert). To emphasize some information:
You may make your hotel reservation one of four different ways:
Online: This year, hotel reservations may be made online. Go to online hotel reservations.
By Phone: US & Canada (800) 424-5256; International (847) 940-2154. Phone reservations are limited to 5 per call. Requests for more than 5 reservations must be submitted in writing.
By Fax: US & Canada (800) 521-6017; International (847) 940-2386. Incoming fax service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Credit Card only.
By Mail: Mail housing form to: San Francisco Housing Bureau, 108 Wilmot Road, P.O. Box 825, Suite 400, Deerfield, IL 60015-0825.
The Housing Bureau is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time. Do not send housing forms to AALS. Only your Annual Meeting Registration Form and payment are sent to AALS. You must register for the Annual Meeting in order to be eligible to receive the discounted convention room rate.
How will my hotel reservation be confirmed? The San Francisco Housing Bureau will send out confirmations by mail, fax or e-mail within 72 hours of processing your reservation. Reservations made by phone will be confirmed immediately with a confirmation number. The hotels do not send out confirmations. If you wish to check on the status of your reservation, call (800) 424-5256.
How do I make changes to my room reservation? Changes and cancellation of your hotel reservation before December 21 can be made once you have received confirmation from the Housing Bureau, by contacting the Housing Bureau by phone (800) 424-5256 or fax (800) 521-6017. After December 21, wait until December 27, and call your assigned hotel directly for any changes or cancellations. The hotels’ phone numbers are: Hilton San Francisco and Towers (415) 771-1400, Hotel Nikko (415) 394-1111, Renaissance Parc 55 Hotel (415) 392-8000.
Will I receive a refund of my deposit if I cancel my reservation? Cancellation of your hotel reservation before December 21: contact the Housing Bureau by phone: (800) 424-5256; or fax: (800) 521-6017. A full refund of your deposit will be by the method of your original payment (check or credit card). Cancellation after December 27, but before 6:00 p.m. on the date of arrival: contact your assigned hotel. A refund of your deposit less $16.00 will be made by check only (not to the credit card used to make the deposit for your hotel reservation.) No refunds are given if cancellation is received after 6:00 p.m. on the date of arrival. Should you need to cancel your reservation, be sure to obtain a cancellation number.
What If I Have Not Received my Hotel Assignment by December 21? In the event you have not received your hotel assignment from the Housing Bureau by December 21, call the Housing Bureau at (800) 424-5256 and request a status report of your reservation.
DISABILITY RELATED ACCOMMODATIONS
The Hilton San Francisco, Renaissance Parc 55 Hotel and Hotel Nikko are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. All public areas are accessible and sleeping rooms with special accommodations are available for those with disabilities. LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Fares listed are for adults; discounts for seniors and children are normally available. Schedule and prices available at press time are as follows:
Alcatraz. Ferries depart every 30 minutes from 9:35 a.m.-2:15 p.m. from Pier 41 at Fisherman’s Wharf (accessible from AALS Annual Meeting Hotels via cable car) for the former island prison known as “The Rock.” Call (415) 705-5555 to purchase tickets or use the website www.nps.gov/alcatraz/, MasterCard and Visa accepted; or go to the ticket booth at Pier 41. Fare is $12.25 for adults. It is recommended that you make reservations well in advance.
The Presidio. The visitor center is located in Building 102 in the Main Post Area. The Presidio, a former military base, is now a national park. Located at the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, this area has been preserved as a natural museum of pre-World War II architecture and landscaping. San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 151 Third Street. Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, 2575 Sandhill Road, Menlo Park. Site of some of the most amazing scientific discoveries of the twentieth century, including experimental and theoretical research in elementary particle physics, development of new techniques of high-energy accelerators. WEATHER
San Francisco enjoys mild weather year-round. Temperatures seldom rise above 70 degrees or fall below 40 degrees. In January, daily temperatures normally vary from 46-56 degrees. January is the “rainy season” in San Francisco, so be sure to bring an umbrella.
