Maintaining Quality in Post-Graduate Programs

Moderator:

Mark A. Rothstein, University of Louisville

Speakers:
John Robert Kramer, Tulane University
John A. Sebert, Consultant on Legal Education, American Bar Association, Chicago, Illinois
John E. Sexton, New York University

A recurring concern in legal education is how to maintain the quality of post-graduate legal education. This session will explore the hallmarks of quality graduate programs, the risks to establishing and maintaining high-quality programs, and the range of internal and external methods of quality assurance. Dean Sexton will provide a dean's perspective on how to develop and maintain standards for assuring academic excellence in graduate programs. Mr. Sebert will discuss the ABA's current acquiescence process and the advantages and disadvantages of having full accreditation review of graduate programs. Professor Kramer, who is the former dean of Tulane University, will consider student perspectives on quality assurance, including the reasonable expectations of students regarding curriculum, instruction, and placement.
