During the last thirty years, payment systems have changed dramatically as credit cards and electronic funds transfers have largely replaced the traditional modes of payment through cash and commercial paper. The increasing commercial use of the Internet will only accelerate the evolution of payment systems.
How can teachers of semester-long courses in this area balance traditional concepts with emerging developments? For example, how much time should the (practically irrelevant) concept of check negotiability be accorded, as opposed to the vast subjects of check collection and loss allocation? Moreover, to what extent should the course cover new modes of payment such as credit cards, Smart cards, Internet payment, home banking, and other forms of electronic funds transfers.
The panelists will discuss these dilemmas and will describe their own changing approaches to identifying the essential elements of payment systems law and practice, given the rapid pace at which payment methods continue to grow and evolve.
