A panel of leading academics from a variety of schools will draw from their experiences and the results of the AALS Preliminary Report on the Promotion, Retention and Tenuring of Faculty Hired in 1990 and 1991 to discuss the racial disparities in retention of law faculty. A primary issue to be addressed is whether the statistics accurately portray greater difficulties that people of color face in succeeding to tenure in law teaching. The intersection of gender with race in the promotion and tenure process will also be discussed. The panelists will explore the possible reasons for the disparities and identify effective strategies for teachers of color on the tenure-track, including advice about building a successful tenure file.
